I recently worked in a retirement home as an intern. I heard several stories from people whose
medical insurance and
dental insurance did not really get the job done when they needed it the most. Many people were dealing with health issues that stemmed from life choices that they made. The more of these experie…

You know usually I'm not huge fan of running in cold weather like this. Last year I'd be snuggled in my warm blanky hibernating from all this cold stuff...I just wasn't a fan, and who could blame me! Well so far early into this wintery season I have decided to take the artic plunge and run with frost forming on my eyebrows, my face, and hat. U gotta love looking like a ice cold Frosty, and receiving weird looks from people thinking your nuts for just being out there! So far I'm enjoying it. Rick…

Last tuesday Chris Brandt and I ran the Sheyenne trails. Beautiful day and a good friend to share the run with. For those of you that don't know we do have some wonderful scenic trails close to home. The Sheyenne trails are located about 38 miles south of Fargo, just a few miles south of Kindred. You run well groomed trails through grasslands which allows farmers to graze their cattle on Federal land. Chris and I had to carefully maneuver around some jittery cattle a couple of times but it was a…

In an attempt not to steal Sally's e-mail writing thunder, and hopefully revive the Beyond Running Community pages, I will be blogging my weekly recipe ideas. Hopefully, this will not only boost your cooking confidence, but also create an open invitation for recipe sharing. Share your favorite recipes, ask questions, give useful insight....anything.
Here is my recipe for this week. Continuing with the sweet treat theme of Halloween, here is a healthier sweet tooth alternative.

Up to yesterday, my longest run had been a half marathon. I decided to try a 15 mile run. It rained/drizzled for 12 miles of the run. I decided after 3 miles of running in the rain that it wasn't that bad. Once I made this decision, the run was a lot more enjoyable. I am feeling sore because instead of taking it nice and slow, I ran a good 30-45 seconds faster than I should of. I had about 10 oz of Powerade at miles 3 & 10.5 and Gu Energy Gel at miles 7.5 & 13. I don't know if this was e…

Just a note of warning: Beware sidewalks full of slippery, slimey, wet, crab apples. With all the rain we have been having, it has turned some of the sidewalks into treacherous stretches of rotten fruit. I almost biffed it on a run last night...it reminded me of running in the bog at the filthy 5K. *sigh* But at least during the filthy your prepared to fall.
Here's another one I need to get off my chest. Have you ever been running along in a resedential area, and suddenly you get a big nose ful…

Missing Out on the Action. Well, not exactly. I had a pretty good fall I have to admit. I ran the Dick Beardsley this year and had what I thought to be my PR until I ran the Fargo half marathon a few weeks later. I thought I was going to miserably fail at this race but it turns out I not only ran my fastest race ever but my friend Rhonda met her goal of running her first half marathon as well! Way to go Rhonda! I am glad I could be there at the finish line to cheer you on!

It is 4 days to the firts annual Fargo Half-Marathon, and I am NOT, I repeat NOT injured (knocking on wood)!! This means if I show up and finish this Saturday I will have accomplished my goal of running a half marathon in 2009!! I am really not concerned about my time, I am more concerned about not walking. I just want to run the entire thing and say to myself, you did it, you just ran 13.1 miles!! I am thinking I should cross the finish around 2 hrs 30 min, unless I get lost. I hope to see lots…

I was on a high as my running schedule was set and wonderfully structured. Then came everything else vying for that space. First came soccer. First it was Sunday night and then someone on the Monday league got injured. So being the sport enthusiast that I am I said, "why not?" and took her spot. Then, hey what about joining a tango group that will do performances in and around Fargo? The exhibitionist in me said, "hell yeah! Look at me, look at me! Two nights of practice a week, I can do that!"…

Well, the morning of the triathlon had arrived. I rolled out of bed around 5am and was surprisingly calm. I met up with my crew, loaded the bikes, and headed to Detroit Lakes.
Josie and I tried to keep our nerves at bay by discussing silly topics and giggling frequently, to Eric's dismay. But when we rolled into the parking lot..woah. It became real. At first, I could only see people that I was sure I had seen on TV coverage of the Olympics before... ok, well, maybe not - but really intimidating…

I had a chance to get one last swim in before this triathlon thing on Saturday. Thursday evening Todd, Jason, and I went to Island Park Pool (or as Josie and I like to say "IP SQUARED"). There were plenty of families taking advantage of the pool, so I had to enter the acutal lap swim area... where the "real" swimmers go.
I decided that tonight, I wasn't going to stop. The only way I was going to stop forward motion was if my lungs filled with water. I wanted to go the distance of the race (550m…

Summer is finally here, which made my swim at the Island Park Pool this noon even better. At least I can stay cool while I continue on my swimming adventure. There sure were plenty of people taking advantage of the pool.
Today, the first 400 meters were tough. I took plenty of breaks between "laps"... but as I continued to swim, I found a 'rhythm' (...who could ask for anything more!)... and once again found myself comparing running and swimming. Just as in running, it takes a bit to "warm up".…

Well, one week to go until the tri. After my "swim" in open water, I figure I better swim as much as possible between now and Saturday. I know that I'm not going to perfect my stroke (I'm just happy to achieve forward motion), but I need to spend as much time in the water as possible (but not too much, I don't want prune-hands) in order to feel less anxiety about the swim.
So Jason and I headed to Island Park Pool Monday evening for lap swim. I have to admit, it's kinda fun to go to the locker…

So far, I have resolved to compete (uh-hum, I mean complete...) this triathalon, come hell or high water. But after swimming in high water, I have to say hell looks kinda pleasant.
Eric, Shannon, Kelly, Jason, Todd and I went camping at Itasca this weekend. A rainy weekend, but fun... and hey, maybe being exposed to water, even in droplet form would help my swim.
After a mountian biking adventure - where the boys left the girls in the dust to eat cattails, push our bikes uphill, and practice o…

Thursday brought a new challenge, a new pool, and the same old fears. I met up with my training crew at Island Park Pool for another try at this swimming thing. I thought that slipping into the pool this time would bring more confidence. There were plenty of seasoned triathletes in the pool, which was a bit intimidating. So I settled into a spot next to the water aerobics class.
This time, I had a secret weapon. The one thing missing from my swim, the thing that was surely holding me back from…

This morning - yes, morning - 5:45 AM to be exact, I met Josie, Todd, Jason and Shannon at the Y for a swim. (Though I use the term 'swim' loosely). I thought hopping in the pool for the third time would be a charm. Unfortunately, there was really nothing charming about my latest swimming attempt.
I thought that trying to swim a little farther without stopping would be a good goal this time. Yeah, a good goal... that I just couldn't reach. I was able to work on a bit more of my technique (thoug…

Last night I decided to "take the plunge" (literally) again. Funny, I was so nervous to swim last time, tonight I was kinda actually looking forward to it. Well, that might be a stretch, but I was excited to get in again and give it a try.
I probably shouldn't have gone for a 10 mile run immediately before my swim, but I thought, hey, if I drown, I want to have an excuse that I was good and tired even before I got in the pool. I met my friends Todd and Jason at the Y for a swim.
Last night, th…

I thought perhaps I should blog about my latest (and slightly crazy) adventure. For some reason, I've signed up for a triathalon. So I feel I should document this experience... maybe so I can look back and be able to see my progress, but mostly to keep a record for my legal files, in case of disaster. (Shoot, I already signed a waiver)....
For the past few years, I've always thought about doing a triathalon. Turns out taking the leap from "thinking" to "doing" took a bit longer than most of my…
